The thesis analyzes the evolution of the requirements for the head of an educational institution in the history of pedagogical teachings using the historical-comparative method. The heritage of Eastern thinkers, European classical pedagogy, the experience of the 20th century and the views of modern educational management are divided into stages. At each stage, the leading function of the leader, the main requirements placed on him and the source of management are determined. As a result of the analysis, the historical roots and continuity of the modern competency approach with traditional views are substantiated.
