This article is devoted to an in-depth study of the problem of classification of word classes in English. The study analyzes traditional grammatical approaches, modern linguistic theories and the views of various linguistic schools. The article considers various criteria for classifying word classes in English, their semantic, morphological and syntactic features, as well as controversial issues in modern linguistics. The results section evaluates the specific aspects of word classes in the grammatical structure of the English language, the effectiveness of various criteria used in their classification.
